Various e-services will be implementing Smart-ID – the new authentication tool

02.02.2017

This week, the first e-services will be implementing SK ID Solutions’ new electronic identity solution Smart-ID, which works with the most popular smart devices, is independent from the SIM card and is available for use all over the world. The first companies to implement the new app will be Starman, Tallinna Kaubamaja Grupp and eKool.

Smart-ID, the innovational solution from SK ID Solutions (SK), can be comfortably used on both Android and iOS platforms with an app that doesn’t require a SIM card or a card reader. Smart-ID can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play Store. The only thing required is an active internet connection. Smart-ID is independent from country borders and thus, is a solution that’s easy to implement across the world. This Estonian innovation will open many new possibilities for both e-service providers and users.

“We have created a modern electronic identity or eID solution that isn’t dependent on a SIM card or the operating system of the smart device it’s running on, yet at the same time it’s very secure to use. I’m glad that Starman, Tallinna Kaubamaja Grupp and eKool are among the first to implement Smart-ID,” said the CEO of SK ID Solutions, Kalev Pihl, who also added that the owners of SK ID Solutions, Swedbank, SEB Pank and Telia Eesti have supported the creation of the new service.

“An increasing amount of Starman’s customers prefer communication on an e-channel instead of calling customer support. One of the first steps to take then is to make it very simple and secure for the customer to use their electronic identity or, in short, to “log in”. SK ID Solutions have proven themselves as a reliable partner and Starman definitely wishes to contribute to eID innovations. We are glad that as of today, you can log on to Starman’s self-service portal using the Smart-ID solution,” said Martin Havik, Starman’s Head of Development Projects.

“Tallinna Kaubamaja Grupp uses only secure authentication methods on Selver’s and Kaubamaja’s online stores and Partnerkaart’s self-service portals, and we are glad that today, we got to be among the first to add another innovational mobile authentication method to that list in the form of Smart-ID,” said Andreas Leznevsky, Director of IT at Tallinna Kaubamaja Grupp.

The CEO of Koolitööde AS, Tanel Keres said that eKool has been using the various identification methods offered by SK ID Solutions for a long time and is very happy with them. But Smart-ID is a novel solution that isn’t dependent on a SIM card and enables the secure use of eKool with other smart devices, not just smartphones. Furthermore, it opens up completely new possibilities for identification in situations where access to the internet is available but there’s no cell reception, or where the user simply doesn’t wish to use a mobile operator abroad.

In addition to the three aforementioned e-services, starting from the second half of February, the recently updated digital signature portal DigiDoc will also support the use of Smart-ID.
The new authentication tool will soon also be implemented by Swedbank, SEB Pank and Telia Eesti.

The innovational Smart-ID works on a simple principle: the user downloads the Smart-ID app from the Google Play Store or the App Store and identifies themselves via Mobile-ID or ID-card. As with the ID-card and Mobile-ID, Smart-ID also requires PIN1 and PIN2 codes to be used. These are created by the user in the app. Smart-ID is free of charge to use. More information: smart-id.com
